The Vampire Cat of Nabéshima |
 |
In ancient Japanese folklore there is a cat that like the bat in
Western mythology, kills a beautiful maiden by biting her neck then sucking her
blood. After burying her body it assumes her identity, it then turns its
attention to the maidens' lover, a handsome prince. During nightly visits the
vampire weakens the prince to the point of death by gradually extracting the
life force from his body. The princes aide decides to stand guard over his
master throughout the night, and forces the cat to escape to the mountains where
it is hunted down and killed.
In 1929 a London newspaper carried an article suggesting that
this Vampire Cat was, according to local Japanese belief, setting out to ensnare
the wives of the old Samurai warriors.
