Humphrey |
Humphrey (an adopted stray) arrived at 10 Downing Street in 1989
as the British prime Minister's official mouser during the premiership of
Margaret Thatcher. He outlasted Mrs. Thatcher and remained during John Major's
occupancy. When he was accused of killing and eating four
baby robins in the garden of No. 10, he was defended by his new owner, who announced
on TV that "it is quite certain that Humphrey is not a serial
killer."
In 1995 he disappeared! It was assumed that he
may have died, probably from kidney failure due to his habit of consuming large
quantities of civil service biscuits. When his probable death was published in The
Times the staff of the Royal Army Medical College, situated just over one
mile away, realized that the cat they had adopted and christened PC was indeed,
Humphrey. He was quickly returned (with international coverage) to his official
role as the First Mouser of the British Isles.
Humphrey's life nearly ended one day, when he was almost
run over by U.S.
President, Bill Clinton's armoured Cadillac. Sadly, Humphrey
died peacefully in his sleep aged 18 in March 2006,
at the home of a Cabinet office official who took him in when he “retired”
in 1997 after the Blair's moved in.
