The Library Cats
Cats are often used to control the mice population in libraries,
as many valuable books have suffered damage due to rodents. The "Library
Cat Society" was established in 1987 in the USA with a creed that reads:
" We advocate the establishment of cats in libraries and recognize the need
to respect and care fore library cats."
One famous library cat (black and white female) called Fred from
Woodford, Connecticut USA became a celebrity when her future was in question due to
an ailurophobe who demanded a tax rebate because she could not enter her public
library. A "Save Fred" campaign was started and the matter even went
as far as the state Governor. Fred was allowed to stay, and he went on to appear on TV,
he was also written about in the New
York Times and People Magazine.
Sadly, in 1986 Fred passed away at the age of fourteen. A Pussy
Willow tree was planted outside the library in Fred's memory.
