The Kellas cat is named after the village of Kellas, Morayshire,
Scotland, UK. In the early to mid 1980s there was much speculation being placed
as to whether a new species or an 'emerging' new species of cat had been
discovered in mainland Scotland. After close study based on the evidence from
eight collected specimens, it was concluded by Dr Andrew Kitchener of the Royal
Scottish Museum, in Edinburgh that seven of the cats showed traits common to
both Scottish wildcats and domestic cats. These cats were described as introgressive hybrids, representing animals with varying degrees of Scottish
wildcat and domestic cat ancestry.
