How Cats Can Transmit Infection
|

|
Babesiosis |
Babesiosis in humans is a rare,
potentially fatal disease that is transmitted by the bite of an infected tick.
Acute symptoms may include fever, loss of appetite, and general deterioration.
Shock, coma or death. The infection responds to a variety of treatments if
caught early, although blood transfusion may be necessary in the later stages of
the disease. Babesiosis occurs mainly in coastal areas in the northeastern
United States, especially the offshore islands of New York and Massachusetts.
Elderly persons and people with weakened immune systems can get severe
complications. No vaccine against it is available.
