Garfield the cartoon cat was created by Jim Davis in 1977, his appeal depends on the fact that he is a unrepentant slob. Making selfishness into an art form, he is greedy, lazy, aggressive, and always gets his own way. He bites the postman, attacks dogs, hates jogging, won't diet, sleeps too much, knocks things over, never apologizing. Garfield at Large, 1980 was a best-seller and was syndicated in 700 newspapers.
