Feline Food Rejection
You have just opened a nice fresh tin of food for your beloved
feline, you place it in a clean dish, then to your amazement kitty sniffs at it
and just walks away! Assuming your cat is healthy and the food is fresh, there
are five possible reasons for this:
-
You have given your cat too much food at one time.
Cats prefer to eat small and frequent meals, allowing time in between to
digest it. In its natural habitat a cat will catch a small rodent (only a
tiny amount compared with a half tin of cat food) then after a while it will
kill another rodent-sized portion, and so on. The reason for rejection could
be that your cat is just not ready for its next 'kill'.
-
Your cat's mood will effect its eating habits. Sex
will temporarily put it off food. Also when the weather is hot or humid a
cat will often suffer a loss of appetite.
-
Your cat may have 'adopted' a friendly neighbour as a
second owner. People will often feed a wandering cat.
-
The food may be in an unsuitable place, making your cat
uneasy about eating. If the food is placed where it is brightly lit,
noisy, busy, or near the litter tray it will effect the way it feeds.
-
Lack of variety could also be the cause of rejection.
Cats like a change of food from time to time.
