There have been many feline residents in 10
Downing Street over the years:-
-
During the 1920s, Labour Prime Minister Ramsay
MacDonald's cat was named Rufus of England, but was nicknamed
"Treasury Bill".
-
Munich Mouser, is mentioned as being "in office"
under Neville Chamberlain and Winston Churchill during the 1930s and
early 1940s.
-
Margate was the name given to a stray kitten who appeared at the door of No 10 Downing
Street in 1953. Prime Minister Winston Churchill immediately adopted the kitten, and as he
had just delivered a speech at Margate, that was the name he choose for his new companion.
The Prime Minister so loved Margate that the cat slept on his bed.
-
During Tory Edward Heath's premiership in the 1970s,
a kitten called Wilberforce was acquired from the RSPCA. He retired
in 1986.
-
Humphrey was adopted in 1989 after wandering into No
10 as a stray while Margaret Thatcher was prime minister, and
remained throughout the administration of John Major. Humphrey
retired a few months after the Blairs moved in to Downing Street.
-
In 2011
Larry, a former street cat joined
David Cameron and his family soon after a rat was seen in No10.
