The African Wild Cat
(Felis sylvestris Libyca)
|
|
It is believed that the word is derived from the Arabic word guttah.
This is attributed to the fact that all domestic cats trace their ancestors back
to the North African
wild cat. The word cat is very similar in many other languages. ie:
French: chat, Italian: gatto, Polish: kot. The ancient
Egyptians called their cats miaw. The word cat did not become popular
until the fourth century and can be linked to the Nubian word kadis.
