Polecat
(Mustela
putorius) |
-
The polecat, as you would
think its name implies, is not actually a cat, but is part of the weasel
family. It is found in wooded areas of N Eurasia, N Africa and the UK.
Polecats grow to approximately 2ft (60cm) in length, including the tail.
They are solitary, nocturnal animals, feeding on small animals and eggs. Not a
friend of the farmer, they have been exterminated in many areas as they are
destructive to poultry and small game. Domesticated strains of polecat have
been developed for hunting (ferret.) It is very difficult to distinguish
between the two animals...even the experts find it difficult to distinguish
between a hybrid and a pure polecat.
