The meerkat is not a related to the cat, it is a member of the mongoose family, and is a small carnivorous mammal. It averages 2 lb (1 kg) in weight and is about 20 in (500 mm) in length. Consuming mostly insects and spiders and other small mammals, it inhabits the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. They are burrowing animals, living in large colonies of up to 40 individuals, in underground networks which they only leave during the day, hunting in groups.
