Catboat |
Catboats, like the felines they are named after, are silent, very well-balanced, fast
and agile. They are wide beamed boats characterized by a single mast carried
well forward. Catboats have a roomier cabin or cargo hold compared to other
sailboat designs of the same length, and normally carry a single sail. Being
developed in the early 1800's, they were used for fishing and transport in the
coastal waters of New England and New York. Catboats are now very popular for
cruising and racing.
The Catboat is not to be confused with Catamaran. The terms catboat
and cat-rigged refer to the sail plan. The term catamaran
describes two hulls side-by-side.
