Aelwaer's Cat
'Saint Aelwaer' was described as a 'demonic
anti-saint. She is portrayed riding a donkey, with a magpie on her head to
symbolize immortality, a pig under her left arm symbolizing gluttony, and
a cat held in her right hand to symbolize all the forces of evil.
The cat is raised up high in Aelwaer's hand to
indicate that it is in league with the devil, as this period of history
was when all felines were brutally
persecuted as being wicked and familiars
of witches.
