The Puma (racing) Car history started in the small city
of Matão in São Paulo, Brazil in 1964 by a farmer named Genaro ‘Rino’
Malzoni. Pumas
were also built in South Africa, The first cars were built in Durban, and
the second run of cars in Verwoerdburg. A Puma is a glassfibre ( not
kit ) car built on VW Beetle running gear.
In 1973 the Puma GTE was presented to the UK, but there
were unexpected legal problems, when Ford of Europe claimed it owned the
Puma name and took legal action. Ford had acquired a manufacturer of
turbines and generators named Puma. In 1998 Ford bought the rights to the
name Puma and began selling the model to the European market.
