Many bizarre animals were invented by the frontiersmen of the American West in the 19th century, as they passed the time telling tall stories, one of which was the Cactus Cat. This fearsome feline was said to have thorn-like hair, a branched tail, and sharp blades of bone on its front legs. The cat was said to have been heard screaming in the night, as it ran about intoxicated by the fermented sap from the giant cacti plants. It would use its sharp blade-like front legs to slash open the cacti to get at the sap within.

It is not surprising that these bizarre animals were dreamed-up, with such creatures as porcupines roaming around and the sound of screaming pumas at night, these would be a good sauce of inspiration for imagination to work overtime in the people.
