Dewclaws
|
Dewclaws have no practical function, and they do not make contact with the ground.
Situated high on the inside of the leg above the foot, it is said that they "brush the dew from the grass"
consequently it is thought that this is where the name originates from.
Sometimes there is only a vestige of the extra toe, it may be just in the
skin or under it. There
are some very good reasons for having them removed from the rear legs, as they can
interfere with the movement of the animal. Whether front or rear they can catch on things and even
on each other, causing falls, fractures,
and tearing of the skin. It is therefore important to keep the claws
trimmed.
